After months of prayer and preparation, we are finally in the Dominican Republic! This summer there are seven interns (3 guys and 4 girls) who will all be in the Dominican for 2 months this summer. We spent the weekend doing an orientation at a beautiful home in Austin. At orientation we were all able to hang out with some of the Austin-based staff and also got to learn a lot about the history and the heart behind Makarios. (If you want to know more about Makarios, click here!)
After waking up at 3 a.m., two short flights, and lots of coffee we finally landed in Puerto Plata. It was exciting to see our friends Doug (Paco) and Juan Carlos again, who greeted us at the airport and brought us back to the Mak house in Loc Ciruelos (a community in Montellano, Puerto Plata). When we got there we were greeted by the Lehr family, a new host family that we will be working with this summer. After a delicious dinner we took a walk around the community and then headed back to the house to turn in after a long day of traveling.
I am beyond excited to be in the Dominican this summer and can’t put into words the feelings I had the second we stepped off the plane. This place is so special to me and taught me so much in the one week I was here a year and a half ago, so I can’t begin to imagine what it will be like spending two months living here. I’m looking forward to a lot of deep conversations with the staff, the other interns, and the people here and also can’t wait to see what the Lord has planned for my relationship with him as well.
Stay tuned for more updates and stories about my life here in the DR. I’m excited to begin this adventure and to share it with you!
